ABOUT: The ATHENA Breast Health Network
The ATHENA Breast Health Network, a large-scale demonstration project, will integrate clinical care and research to drive innovation in prevention, screening, treatment and management of breast cancer. This project will improve survival and reduce suffering from breast cancer by accelerating research discovery and the time it takes to implement innovations in clinical practice. As part of the University of California system collaborating in ATHENA, the UC Medical Centers will:
- Enroll 150,000 women into a screening cohort
- Implement a comprehensive web-based informatics strategy to modernize the way in which we collect and track clinical information and integrate it with research and learning
- Collaborate with NCI/BIG Health on developing an informatics strategy to integrate clinical care and research
- Create an unparalleled biospecimen and data repository linked to a common clinical registry to fuel research and innovation in breast cancer care
- Introduce a system for evidence-based management
The ATHENA Breast Heath Network is currently funded by a UC Office of the President MRPI Grant and the Safeway Foundation.
